Director Sam Wainwright Douglas’ (Citizen Architect, Honky Tonk Heaven) new documentary “Through the Repellent Fence: A Land Art Film” collects the talents of several leading Land Art figures, including Chris Taylor of Texas Tech’s Land Arts program and highly regarded art theorist/historian Lucy Lippard (Undermining). The film follows the creation of a two-mile-long land art project created by Postcommodity, a collective of Native American artists working at the US-Mexico border. The civilizations inhabiting our continent have had distinct and drastically differing approaches to land ownership and division; Postcommodity addresses and wrestles with these divergent notions in Repellent Fence. The film follows their interaction with US and tribal authorities to allow the construction of the eponymous Fence. “Through the Repellent Fence” premiered at MoMA in New York, showed at SXSW Austin, and was underwritten partially by Texas Tech Public Media.
